Grip Fighting and Seated Guard

Each game consists of a three minute round, a one minute break, and then another three minute round with the position of the players switched.


Attacking Player:

  • Position: Standing in front of your partner with one arm connected to their torso inside one of their arms (underhook).
  • Objective: Focus on getting inside of or around your partner's elbows.
  • Constraints: No takedowns.
  • Win Condition: Both hands connected behind your partner's back.

Defending Player:

  • Position:Standing in front of your partner with one arm connected to their torso inside one of their arms (underhook) on the side opposite their underhook.
  • Objective: Focus on getting inside of or around your partner's elbows.
  • Constraints: No takedowns.
  • Win Condition: Both hands connected behind your partner's back.

Reset if either player wins.


Attacking Player:

  • Position: Standing in front of your partner completely disconnected.
  • Objective: Tag one of your partner's knees as many times as possible before the round ends.
  • Constraints: No takedowns.
  • Win Condition: None

Defending Player:

  • Position:Standing in front of your partner completely disconnected.
  • Objective: Focus on preventing your partner from touching your knees by using movement to create space and your limbs to impede their movement.
  • Constraints: No takedowns.
  • Win Condition: None

This game is continuous.


Attacking Player:

  • Position: Standing in front of your partner completely disconnected.
  • Objective: Get your partner's hands on the mat.
  • Constraints: No takedowns.
  • Win Condition: None

Defending Player:

  • Position: Standing in front of your partner completely disconnected.
  • Objective: Get your partner's hands on the mat.
  • Constraints: No takedowns.
  • Win Condition: None

Attacking Player:

  • Position: Standing in front of your partner with one of their ankles or shins connected to one of your legs and one hand connected to your legs.
  • Objective: Focus on breaking your partner's connections to your body, and progress past their knees to their thighs. Remain there as long as possible.
  • Constraints: Do not proceed past the thighs.
  • Win Condition: None

Defending Player:

  • Position: Seated in front of your partner with one of your shins or ankles connected to one of their legs and one hand connected to their legs.
  • Objective: Create meaningful connections to your partner's legs using your legs, hands, and arms. Use those connections to destabilize your partner to their hands or hips. If they go to their hands hold them there for as long as possible.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: None

Top Player:

  • Position: On your knees in front of your training partner with your partner's feet inside your knees.
  • Objective: Break your partner's connections to your body and pin them to their back.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Pinning bottom player to their back.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: Seated on your butt with our feet between your partner's knees.
  • Objective: Maintain seated open guard, keep your feet between your partner's knees, and your head/hands pointed at the top player. Make connections between the top player's elbows or make connection to the outside of top player's elbows. Attempt to make your opponent post, and then connect to the shoulder line with underhooks and connect your hands.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Double underhooks with connected hands

6 Minute Round

Live round with a partner. Start standing if you are able to do so safely. Otherwise pick the starting position from one of the previous games and start there. Roll to submission, reset, and continue. Repeat as many times as possible before the round ends.
